Dolby Atmos & Spatial Audio

Operator guide for detecting multichannel/Dolby audio, verifying Atmos delivery, and preserving safe fallbacks.

Upload detection

After an MP4/MOV master finishes ingest, Command scans bounded R2 byte ranges for ISO-BMFF audio sample entries. It can identify ac-3, ec-3, mp4a and visible channel-count metadata. This is a fast hint, not a mastering/QC replacement.

Do not equate ec-3 with Atmos. Plain Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 also uses ec-3. Command therefore marks it as Dolby Digital Plus / Atmos candidate until JOC is verified in HLS.

Verify an Atmos HLS master

  1. Open Program Library → Audio / Atmos.
  2. Select the master.
  3. Enter the public HTTPS .m3u8 master playlist.
  4. Leave Spatial Audio enabled unless the title should be restricted.
  5. Save.
  6. Press Validate / detect Atmos HLS.

VERIFIED requires HLS Dolby Digital Plus ec-3 plus uppercase JOC in the audio rendition CHANNELS attribute.

Dolby Vision + Atmos

If a program has both, use one multivariant HLS master carrying both technologies and enter the same URL in both panels. Command can detect Atmos while validating that Dolby Vision manifest.

Viewer behavior

HVN prefers a verified enhanced HLS source when the browser/device path can use it. Compatible Apple HLS paths can use system Spatial Audio automatically for multichannel content. Unsupported paths retain stereo/HLS alternatives or the uploaded canonical uploaded master. Command never rewrites the user's operating-system spatial-audio setting.

Staging QC

Test at minimum: compatible Apple device/headphones or speakers; ordinary SDR/stereo browser; commercial-break pause/resume; Dolby Vision + Atmos combined title if applicable; and a title whose enhanced HLS is intentionally made unavailable to verify fallback.
