Dolby Vision & HDR

How to attach, validate, schedule and verify Dolby Vision delivery for selected HVN programs while preserving a safe canonical uploaded master.

What Command does — and does not do

Command stores picture-range/profile metadata, validates Dolby Vision signaling in a public HTTPS HLS master, and exposes only a verified Dolby Vision HLS URL to HVN playback. Command does not encode, remaster, certify, or convert a source into Dolby Vision.

Preferred HVN delivery model

  1. Upload an air-ready MP4/WebM canonical uploaded master.
  2. Create the Dolby Vision adaptive-HLS package using an appropriate professional workflow.
  3. Host the HLS master/segments on public HTTPS with browser/CORS access.
  4. Open Command → Playout Automation → HDR / Dolby Vision.
  5. Select the program and set fallback range, Dolby profile, HLS master URL and optional codec string.
  6. Save, then choose Validate Dolby Vision HLS.
  7. Only a VERIFIED HLS URL can become the preferred public HVN source.

Fallback behavior

HVN attempts the verified HLS master for that program. If HLS playback fails, the player returns to the uploaded Command master. Unsupported viewers must still receive a usable fallback rendition/file; Dolby Vision must never be the only way a scheduled program can be watched.

Profiles accepted by Command

ProfileCommand use
5Dolby Vision OTT/VOD metadata.
8.1Dolby Vision metadata for an HDR10-compatible workflow.
8.4Dolby Vision metadata for an HLG-compatible workflow.

The selected profile is metadata/QC information. Command does not alter the encoded bitstream.

Validation status

StatusMeaning
OFFNo Dolby Vision path configured.
DECLAREDThe uploaded master is marked Dolby Vision, but no verified HLS path exists.
CONFIGUREDAn HLS URL exists but has not passed the current manifest check.
VERIFIEDCommand fetched the master playlist and found Dolby Vision signaling.
FAILEDThe manifest fetch/signaling check failed.

Mandatory staging test

☐ Verified status in Command
☐ Program plays on a Dolby Vision-capable target device
☐ Dolby Vision badge/capability state behaves as expected
☐ Unsupported browser/device still receives usable video
☐ Seek into middle of scheduled file works
☐ Scheduled commercial break holds/resumes the program correctly
☐ Manual TAKE LIVE / RETURN TO SCHEDULE still works
☐ National Screen Bug remains transparent over the HDR program

Troubleshooting

Validator rejects URL: require public HTTPS, no embedded credentials, and an .m3u8 master URL. No Dolby signal: inspect the master playlist for dvh1/dvhe or appropriate supplemental codec signaling. Verified but no badge: the browser may not report Dolby Vision codec support; test on known-capable hardware. HLS starts then falls back: inspect CORS, segment URLs, codec support and CDN/origin errors.
